I also agree that you'd do better from learning your own relevant lessons in the first hand and reading a manual as you get along.
A course is bound to go at too slow/fast a pace for you and a lot will be irrelevant or too basic. Maybe a 2day basics course would be ok: chains, oil changes, plug changes but you can read that off the net/manual.
There's not a lot of theory behind stripping down a bike and rebulding it (unless you're talking stripping engines) it's just a case of getting your hands dirty and remembering where stuff goes - barr that it's just knowing where and what to grease and how much to tighten stuff.
It's electrics which is pure witchcraft....

Just like a big jigsaw puzzle complete with stripped threads and chewed nut and screw heads and a tendancy to overtighten things that shouldn't be that tight and not tighten things that should be very tight

eBay's a doddle for stands. I paid 32 quid for a stand couple of weeks back. I never buy anything from Halfords anymore - you pay for the luxury of being able to walk in store and just pick it up. Even on small consumables eBay's way cheaper and you can even get free postage on a lot of stuff these days. Buy it on Sunday and you'll have it to use by the weekend.

I'd love to do a course like this. It would make me so much more confident with the more mundane tasks, which at present are not so mundane! Just wish I had the time.

So would I. Just don't have the spare money! Hear all yorkie_chris et al have said. The thought of cocking up something on my bike always puts me off even basic stuff until it's desperately necessary - like the amount of sh*** in my brakes ATM. Time to man up...

plenty of documentation on brakes on here. Not too bad but obviously be very very careful and if unsure ask (bit of a vital bit of kit are brakes )

Look at it this way, even if you make the most monstrous c*ckup you can imagine it will still be cheaper than dealers labour charge for job.
