Just open the throttle, whether a car wants you to get in front at the lights or not is not even worth consideration.
If they do anything really daft then back off, be patient, then either pull alongside and see how they feel face to face, or rake your toesliders down the side of their car. With practice you can gouge every panel on one side of the car down to the metal.

So we carry on side by side for about 20 yards and then she swerves at me, causing me to slam on the brakes and nearly hit the kerb. I regain composure and by this thime she has (as expected hit the tail of the queue of traffic and I smugly filter past)
where you filtering down the inside ?? if so maniac or not, thats just asking to get slammed by someone.......... |

You need to learn to launch, no way any car short of silly quick stuff is going to be anywhere near me off the line and that's *not* speeding.
The SV is a piece of p*ss to launch pretty quick[1] too, get it moving with a wiff of throttle and a tadge of clutch, drop the revs slightly to match road speed, let out the clutch and accelerate hard. Druid [1] Very quick involves 9k, lots of clutch slip, hanging over the front end and still waving the front wheel in the air, not a good idea on a regular basis unless you have a free clutch plates supply and a number of get out of jail free cards.
