![]() We also use it in aircraft wheels for different reasons. Not many bikes hit 30,000 feet so it's less of a worry ![]() |

I know of no advantage for everyday riding, but having said that I have used helium in tyres to keep them cool

Sorry you'll have to go into more detail with that, you seem to have accidentally given the same explanation as the people charging for the service
![]() Why does nitrogen expand less than air when hot?

![]() AFAIR heat capacity ratio for nitrogen is less than that of air so expands less with temperature. It won't be a huge difference however, and it's not the main purpose of it. Using air you'll never be sure of the moisture content and subsequent expansion when heated. Humidity, atmospheric pressure and all kinds of jazz are all variables that can be removed very easily by using nitrogen. With pure nitrogen you know how it will expand with temperature exactly. Like I say, at F1/GP level it makes sense. For road riding it's just a scam. |

I'd hazard a guess that it's so close to ideal gas behaviour with regards ratio of heats as to be completely negligible.
Aha moisture content, now you may be onto something... Of course, I'm sure the water based tyre soap used has absolutely no effect on the humidity inside the tyre... ![]() As you agree, for the road, a scam. I don't think the racing teams use it for any particular reason except it being readily available in dry form and not a safety risk.

The inert nature of nitrogen may also be more important on a plane as the wheels must get bloody hot going from unloaded, -40 degree, standstill to a 100 ton load, god knows what temperature and 200mph in one "eep"

So, we've established it's probably a waste of money to have a nitro fill. Will it mean I don't have to check my tyre pressures as often? i.e. are the particles bigger?
BTW - Tyres are well scrubbed in now. Full off confidence in the dry and easily as good as my old 021's in the wet - which surprised me (got to test 'em this morning)... Overall for the money - a REALLY good option. I'm runinng at 36F, 42R btw. I prefer the feel at these pressures. |
