I gave up 5 years ago in a moment of rage. You either give up or you don't. Isolate yourself from smokers for the first week or two to make it easier on you.

That's why I've never understood patches, it's like trying to give up smoking heroin, by injecting it instead

The nicotine habit is hellish to break, but if you go cold turkey, it only takes about a week to 10 days of ripping your hair out, before your body adjusts.

After that it's the habit, such as after meals, in the car, breaks at work, etc. That takes a lot longer to break and I'd go as far as saying it never leaves you. 10 years after I stopped and I still crave a cigarette when sitting in the sunshine with a beer. Every so often when I come to a halt in a traffic jam, I find myself subconsciously looking at the storage pockets in the dash, and on the passenger seat, sometimes even in the glovebox, then I think "what the hell am I looking for?", then it dawns on me that I was looking for a cigarette packet and a lighter.

BTW, throw out any fags you have left in the house, and as someone said already avoid other smokers, then you only need willpower when you go to the shops.

'ooohhh look there's a nice sweet instead'.

BTW, throw out any fags you have left in the house, and as someone said already avoid other smokers, then you only need willpower when you go to the shops. being next to people smoking never bothered me and still doesn't.

i may have given up the fags for the moment but that's not to say i might start again in the future. so far i have been on long drives and in the pub and have craved a fag something awful but the craving goes away a lot quicker than when i first stopped. as Ralph says the craving never goes away its just a matter of controlling it.

Well done Apollo! Never been a smoker, but hear hypnotherapy is a great thing to stop the craving [not touched bread for almost two years thanks to it] Dx

Good call!!

Stick in at it, if the patches and stuff work for you then good, anything that helps.

I vividly remember telling my dad to stop smoking when I was about 8. It's what we girls do, preparing for a life time of keeping men under the thumb!

Just mean we need to rely on Grant to keep the midges at bay at GM4!

As I understand it the nicotine is what makes us addicted to the product but on it's own that wont kill us, it's all the other **** in fags that does that! The patches and inhaler didn't work for me but the nicorette gum worked a treat! Good luck try some chewing gum if all else fails.
