I've got a big 'ol brick under it now. I think I will whip the whole linkage out and make life a bit easier for myself! Wish me luck...

Let me get this straight, by the way: The "nut" I removed was actually a welded part of the mounting fork? That's not very clever of me at all.

It happens, sometimes welds can break if threads are seized and you try to undo bolt.

The one I have here has no nut welded to it. The hole is punched and the material has pushed out around the hole effectively thickening the side of the fork where it's threaded.
As has been suggested above I suspect that the original thread has been damaged, and the nut was used to secure the bolt, now the damaged threads are spinning but not unscrewing.

Okay, well I cracked a socket trying to remove the linkage entirely so I ended up hacksawing the bolt, yanking out the threaded end with mole grips and "drifting" out the rest with a masonry screwdriver and a claw hammer. There's nothing like the right tools for the job.
Old shock out, new shock in. Top and bottom bolts in and tightened up. Then... DOH! The bottom bolt I bought to match the shock is just slightly too long so I can't swing down the suspension linkage rods. Presumably I need to buy a different bolt and nut (assuming that I shouldn't give in to my first whim and just hacksaw the ******* a few mm shorter...), but which? Any advice, as ever, very much appreciated! D |

Just grind the end off the bolt. I did same when I fitted the ZX10 shock as the Kwak bolt is just a wee bit too long.

No power to my garage, sadly. However, I'm pretty sure I've got a giant rasp somewhere.

Good news! Swap complete! Even set up completely at random it's night and day.
Any suggestions on compression and rebound settings for a portly 115kg chap? |
