My buffalo infinti router is the N i think and the higher rate (128?), apart from the odd day when it needs a reset, its brilliant, it used to clash sometimes with my neighbours but they have since had another ISP and router and i havent had any problems since.

Bit of a sort of thread hijack here, but it is still wi-fi related

Two questions....

Why only 3 there appears to be more

Although I think I'll buy some NETGEAR ones which are 500mps.

Tinpants, home plugs use your household wiring to transfer the data instead of over the air like WiFi, so good for houses with big thick walls, which WiFi can't get through. Saves having to chase cables everywhere.

One Home-plug is situated next to the router and is connected by an Ethernet cable. This master is plugged into the mains at the nearest socket.

Your other computer/device is anywhere in the house by a wall socket and the other home plug goes in there. Again connected by Ethernet cable to your computer.

Don't ask me how they get the data travelling round on house electrical wiring, I just know it can
Do these really work? I thought electrical interference was one of the major no-no's in pooter stuff, this seems a bit ar5e about to my, alright I'm thick with pooters, logic

Er yes, because its only data you're moving, nothing to do with the internals of the puter

The channels are not separated and overlap each other, the following diagram will show you what i mean

So basically if your neighbor is using channel 3 and you switch to channel 4, you will still experience interference.
When I say there are 3 true channels that is incorrect, what I should say is that you can only squeeze 3 separate (non interfering) channels from the 13/14 available

Which will be clearly shown and animated in real time on the free app I mentioned several pages ago ... inSSIDer Find the biggest gap surrounded by the weakest signals and set your channel to the middle of that.

Most people have no need or ability to hard-wire their entire house and just need their service to be "good enough" and simple to use for a bit of browsing.

Mains plugs usually cause all kinds of RF interference so don't be surprised if DECT phones and mobiles take a bit of a turn for the worse once your entire ring-main becomes a wide-band transmitter.

If you have BT homehub 2 version 1 or 1.5 you can add a second as a repeater then effectively roam between transmitters if you want but unfortunately it does not work on HH2 or HH3.
