How does my brain decide the importance of information to remember?

Today I've recalled, on demand answers to the following questions:
"When you built the servers 18 months ago, what non-standard ports were the RPC calls restricted to?"
"What make of brake pads did Lozzo reckon were used by many as OEM fitment"


And yet, my wedding anniversary, and birthdays of my family flitter in and out of my wandering mind. Why?

I somehow remember the REG plate of a car that was outside a restaurant 3 years ago. I don't know why I remember it. *sigh*
