I remeber using these maybe 27 years ago whilst on a Dartmoor camping weekend for the Duke Of Edinburgh award scheme. Small and light as you say, but the fuel is not as easily available as gas and petrol.

I took a Colemans petrol burner with me when I was touring europe for a couple of weeks, and it was a very powerful little cooker, and of course no problems with finding fuel for it. The only problem I had was my own fault; I inadvertently overfilled it, and managed to get massive (3 feet or so) flames spurting out the top of it, which singed my eyebrows a bit. It also stunk of petrol, even wrapped up in numerous carrier bags so don't pack it anywhere near your clothes.

But the fuel lasts so long, and the refills of fuel are about £3 so unless you were going away for weeks, I don't see that it would be a problem.

Plus if you're stuck, you could always use firelighters.

Don't get me wrong, I think they are probably one of the best solutions for camping on a bike due to the size and the fact that there is nothing to leak, I was just pointing out that you'd need to take all the fuel you'd expect to use as you won't be able to buy any unless close to a town with a camping shop or army surpass store etc.

Only if you want all your saucepans to be black with soot and your food to taste like it's been dipped in paraffin.

Depends how much you intend on cooking, hexy burners are alright but they're a complete faff compared to a proper petrol or gas stove.

For the odd brew though, cracking.

I think the availability of the fuel would be about the same as small gas canisters for stoves. The majority petrol stations and chandleries that I've seen selling gas only do refillable canisters like Campingaz R407 and all the larger ones.

Yeah you can't easily simmer things but for size and weight they are great.

For a very small and lightweight gas stove that isn't too expensive, the MSR Pocketrocket is tiny and stores in a small plastic case:

Size in hand:
