I'm a CG Supervisor at the company that made the ad (http://www.nexusproductions.com/). Basically that means I look after the job from start to finish in terms of what you actually see on the screen. We've got producers who handle all the client and admin stuff. I was given the idea as a storyboard from the directors and basically worked out how to do it. We made loads of little models and rehearsed the entire thing on a 5D, so we knew exactly where the hands were at any point, then shot it in a day. It's made up of 53 separate takes so it was a bit of a slog. I did some 3D and comp work that I then give to the crew as a guide of how it's actually going to be done, then it's more a case of keeping on top of everything and making sure it all works.
Once we had the footage and the edit, we tracked all the vehicles and animated all the transitions, removed (painted out) all the old models in the actors' hands and lit, rendered and comped all the CG elements into the plate. It was all done in 3DS Max, rendered in VRay and composited in Nuke.
I'm working on a 'Making Of' right now, I'll post it up when it's done

I think it works so much better as the full thing. I totally missed the central premise when I seen one or two of them on their own. Honda normally show these things in full a few times then after a while only show you a clip to remind you of it, to me that works better.

Totally agree. I only ever saw it as a 2 min film so was a bit disappointed when I first saw it as idents. You don't get any overall sense of the connections and transformations if you just see it in bits.
The full thing'll be online and if it does well, I'm hoping they'll show the full version on TV. Must cost a fortune for 2 mins of airtime though!

The full 2 min video is awesome, would be better to see more of the good things Honda make and less Jazz though.
