I beg to differ. There was a day when the big bikes were significantly heavier and they did require a different approach however those times are well behind us. I accept that a bad rider can made up some lap time riding in the manner you describe but my GSXR1000 carries as much corner speed now as I did when I raced open 250s 15 years ago......

What a big bike will teach you is to be delicate with the throttle, unless of course you ride one of those new namby pamby things with traction control........

Excellent debate and repartee, but what am I going to do this year ? Run the thou for another year or sell her on while she’s still got her looks and get a super sports ? Here's another vid from earlier last year. Different Gixxer 750K5 as camera bike.

Ratty, how stock is the suspension on your SV? Apart from the obvious difference in the way the power is delivered on an IL4 Superbike they all come with fairly track oriented suspension, where the SV clearly doesn't. If it's lap times you are chasing then it may be "cheaper" to tweak what you have? If on the other hand you really do want that "Oh my God, I'm going to die" feeling then there is no substitute for 170+BHP....!

So in all its not a deal breaker. Plus the roads would have a pot holes

The suspension is pretty much stock. I had the shock refurbished by KAIS last winter and Nick altered the shimming slightly. Stock spring. Only thing I've done at the front is heavier fork oil. I've dialed in my own settings. I have also stripped, cleaned and regreased the mounts and linkages, swingarm bearings and shimmed out the end float from the swing arm. She handles pretty well I think, but the problem is the all up weight. Shes about 25 - 30kg heavier than say a Gixxer 750 track bike. To stay with the lads I'm going to need a better Master cylinder, QA throttle, sportier exhaust with remap and a diet. Selling the SV and buying modded road going supersport is probably my best option, but would anybody buy the SV. I think I'd have to be fairly honest about her track habit during a sale. Hence this thread to see what people really think.

Personally I don't think you'd have much problem selling as you've obviously been keen to look after it and a lot of people will buy from an honest enthusiast.

Another thing I forgot to mention if you're undecided between a Superbike and a smaller Supersport is the running cost, especially tyres. I'm lucky if I can make a rear last a day on the 1000 (at some circuits like Lydden or Brands I have to turn it round at lunch time) where my son who runs exactly the same tyres (although 180 rather than 190 size) on his GSXR 600 can do several days on a rear, and his lap times are practically the same as mine.........unless we go to Silverstone or Spa where I can really let her loose!

I wouldn't use a 1000 four for the track, but I am tempted by the Gixxer 750, preferably a K6 / 7. I'd like to try a 600 again. I've not ridden a supersport 600 since my first track experience on one of Ron's at Donington, back in 2005. I do like the forgiving drive the big V offers out of the slower turns. Anybody want to lend me an 848 for a day ? My thou does look pretty at the track though, next to all those tatty track bikes.
