I think a nitrous oxide kit would be cool - maybe wired into the pass button (If only I could stop prodding it when I cancel my indicators)?

Good work dude, awesome project for uni!

You'll find everyone on here beating down your door if you don't keep them updated though

Those kind of pics are just porn to SV riders so keep teasing them.

On another note, Motec engine management systems MMMMMMMMM niiiiice.

Got a mate from Brookes Uni working on a motor for the same race! They've taken a triumph engine to do the same thing with. I've seen it in action and my God, it's amazing what you can do with a stock engine. Bit of an **** making a dry sump though.......

Hi All,

The project is starting to come along well now. After a very long wait, we finally got our K3 SV650 engine. It’s in really good condition and should be a good platform to start on. At the moment it’s starting to be torn down so that we can rebuild it and take measurements that we need. Also going into the engine this year are a set of Falicon rods and Falicon adjustable cam sprockets.

We are not doing the displacement reduction this year (whoohoo) so the engine will be tested as a 650 cc engine. A project for someone next year will be to design a strengthened crank with a smaller throw to reduce the stroke.

This year the engine is being set up to do research on and muck around with settings, so the MoTeC allows us to vary the fuel maps as well as spark. The SV will also have a cam sensor so that we can run sequential injection. All this will be set to run on 98 RON fuel, as this is what they supply at the competition.

We are also planning on mounting the blower in a way so that we can measure exactly how much power it is drawing from the engine. The unit also fits in-between the V which is a good thing for all of us who want to ride a blown SV some day . The blower itself as shown a couple of posts up is and Opcon Autorotor twin-screw unit. It weighs about 3.5 kgs (around 8 pounds for the metric impaired). It flows 0.32 litres per revolution, so the cfm is set depending on the speed it’s doing (up to 20,000 rpm max). Boost pressure is also dependant on the drive ratio, so we will be starting low and slowly increasing boost until it knocks (or until Mr. Piston says hello to Mr. Valve ).

Trying to find a drive location has been a real headache. The first concept was to have something like this where there is a large driveshaft coming out the side of the engine with a custom housing…

…but I wanted to have something a bit more compact that didn’t require recasting of the clutch cover and the generator side was pretty full. The new design is more compact and looks like it may fit within the frame of the bike (ahem, if it were ever put in a bike )… but that’s all I’m saying. Hey I have to keep some suspense .

With the 20 mm restrictor that we have to use, the engine will run to about 7,500 to 8,000 rpm, but I’m hoping to do some tests without the restrictor. (Engine at 10,000 rpm, blower at 20,000 rpm, power at Hp)

Here’s the engine on the day it arrived. We couldn’t help ourselves and just had to pull some stuff off.

Well that’s about it so far, so until next time…..

Cheers

On a side note, we also have a Hyosung GT650 engine which a colleague at uni is working with. We're tearing both engines down together, and its amazing how similar they are (I think the SV is way better but people say I’m biased)

I thought the Hyosong was more or less an exact copy of the SV engine..

Nah, though it'll be designed along the same approximate spec...
