Good to see Ghostrider has an SV in his extensive collection of bikes and is posting here...

I honestly don't believe it's different to any other manoeuvre. Provided you're confident of the situation and take due care, then it's no different to passing a vehicle on the inside when their lane is going slower than yours.
Interesting, as you say the Highway Code isnt law its merely persuasive, hmm

But, I must say, even your example scares the bejesus out of me. As I said in my post, no one checks their left side, quick look in their mirrors and they are shooting for a gap. At least on their right there is a cat-in-hell chance they will hear you, not an option on the left, hence the number of accidents I have seen on the A12 concerned with this. So simply, I rarely do it in the car and twitch slightly when I do it on the bike.

Oddly filtering almost stationary traffic seems almost natural but undertaking at speed is up there with tongue on the mains cable, of things best considered unwise

I've had more near-offs due to people trying to change lanes when I'm filtering than when undertaking at speed. Probably because when filtering, you're boxed in a narrow corridor so you can only go forwards or brake- you can't use another lane as an 'escape route' like you can when undertaking.

Unless it's to go round a car turning right then I agree.

I said the lane discipline one, but I would also vote for the escape route one, since I always try to ride with one.

And halonic, jonboy is entirely right, the highway code is just a set of guidelines except where it says MUST or MUST NOT where it is law; it will also have a reference to the section of the Road Traffic Act which backs the statement up.

Agreed, but only at very reduced speed and the "Numpty Scanner" turned up full. Even in my short biking career I've lost count of the number of times a driver has changed his/her mind and gone straight on or, on one occasion, turned left instead

Oh yes, had that happen a couple of times.
