I understand that the banks want to deter people from going overdrawn, and without the fine I'm guessing people may not pay as much attention to overdraft limites, etc.

However although some people may take the michael, I reckon that these fines are more often incurred by people accidentally going overdrawn from time to time, rather than a deliberate misuse of the system. It's annoying that these fines are just being used to boost profits at the expense of anyone who doesn't avidly study their account every day.

What caps it off though and makes me fully support that move to get the charges removed/refunded is that they aren't legal - so basically they're taking money off you illegally (and probably knowingly that this is the case) and have got away with it because noone realised/wanted to challenge big corporations before.
