you don't need a strike to hit anything the Electromagnetic Pulse off Lightning can fry things... My father in law (to be - give it time)

was a telecoms engineer and his workload went through the roof after good thunderstorm with all the computer systems that went phut... I bet he was laughing his head off last night cause he's retired...

Should be ok though regardless. Im on a laptop, and wireless broadband!
No hes not winding you up. Think about how many volts of electric are in a lightning strike. Then think about that coming down your electricity or phone cable.
Surge/spike is an understatement tbh.

Theres a reason people have surge protectors. Wireless you may have, laptop is fine if its battery. But your router will be plugged into the phone line and probably into the electricity too. And if your laptop isnt on battery and plugged in if it hits the wire it can fry it.
A surge protector is better than nothing, but if the strike is as close as yours was then it's as good as sunblock at Hiroshima. Luckily is sounds like it didn't hit any part of the electrics in your neighborhood, otherwise your insurance company would be well p*ssed off with you now...

Hey, You should check the ground in your garden. If you are lucky then it might have travelled through the ground a bit. If you have sandy soil the current can melt the sand and form glass. These glass pieces are very rare and very valuable!

I've had a modem fry by it being plugged in to the phone line during a storm. It's a big pain.

But you are much braver than me watching it. I would have knocked myself out with night nurse and hid under the covers.

The cat is fine!! Can I just clarify that said cat had CHOSEN to sit outside and watch the ligtning! She wasn't shut out and not allowed back in. As far as I am aware, she came in quick smart when The massive bolt hit. And, for the record, I did check to see if she was ok immediately afterwards. See, I am a good mummy

Also, for the record, I did unplug the laptop from the mains, so I was battery powered. HOwever, thankyou for the numerous mum style lectures. It is very nice to know that you care. Group hug anyone?
