In my case fully comp just isn't an option. All insurers want at least double my TPFT premium for fully comp so TPFT it is. And that was with a clean license and 4 years NCB, now i've got a ban on my license and a RTC pending i've got no chance.

I'm TPFT, including business use. My fully comp quotes were 4 times what my TPFT one is (£275).

In order for fully comp to make fiscal sense for me, I'd have to have an off of this magnitude every year! Not something I'm planning on.
Also, even if I had been FC, I'd have to think long and hard about claiming, even for something like this. £700, minus my £250 excess is only £450 I'd get back (assuming of course that the policy covered my leathers- otherise it'd be less than £80 back)- probably not worth losing my no claims (and subsequent increased cost in premiums over the next couple of years)

My excess is £400- I could have done that and had it serviced and a shiny new fairing, but at the time, I wouldn't have been able to afford a new lid. So I went for the cheaper option- though my spill was only fairly minor. Even though the fault is with me and my no claims is affected anyway, it was still the better option.

Learned more about the bike too...

I see where you are coming from chaps !
I was only considering matters from a personal point of view. With ebike I pay £94.50 fully comp - but I am 48. However I do only have 2 yrs experience with a "big bike" and only have 4 yrs NCB so that still cheap as chips as technically I am a bit of a risk. So in my case I would have to claim as I wouldn't even get a couple of mirrors fo £94 !

Wow! At that price I can see why you choose fully comp. A mate of mine is your age, but with a lot more experience & NCB and he paid about £200 fully comp for an old K750 beemer. I'll put him onto ebike (not to mention check them myself come renewals).

Odd you should mention this. I had previously not heard of "sticky grit" and didn't really notice this comment yesterday. Last night however, in my hotel room (with a nice pale carpet ) I noticed that I had left a dark mark on the floor and closer inspection revealed a bit of tar stuck in the grip on the underside of my boot. Now, I've previously only seen this sort of sticky tar when touching freshly laid tar, or on very hot summers days. I certainly didn't walk on any on the way to the hotel, so it looks like it possibly was from the accident site.

This coupled with the second bike accident in the same spot shortly afterwards, makes me think it could have something to do with my accident. Anyone know of a way to confim where sticky grit has been used?

Just spotted this in the Register article on it, mid post, "Accordingly, it threw some molasses into the mix and gave it a try on the M4 near Bristol and Bath."

This looks more and more likely by the second...

Thanks for the kind words......but I'm glad to say that I've not had an off. Helped by the fact that I've not been ON the bike for too long, but the weather etc is relly crap right now.

Ah, but Gary, this is the best time of year to bin it- lots of possible excuses

On the insurance thing, I'm comp, but mainly in case of total loss. To make it worth claiming I'd need to do, oh, £600 worth of damage probably- the first £250 being excess and the rest being the increase in premiums over the next couple of years. My crashes are quantity not quality so it's never been worth doing. But I might ride under a truck on the way home and totally destroy it, and if I do I'd be glad for the £4500 agreed value payout

personaly......yeah get the new bike bits.....but i wouldnt put them on till i was selling up.

rather risk a crash on buggered plastics than on spanking new ones.....cost will just go up up and away!

so i do away with plastics all together!
