I was in the Army Cadets in the mid seventies back in Northumberland. Got to Corporal too! Big stuff we thought we was really it and always beat up the ATC lads (well, we shouted loudest)! Girls weren't allowed in then.

It was all fantasy - we were based next door to an SAS TA unit and used their armoury and indoor rifle range. I had the job with a couple of others of collecting our weapons (this was top IRA activity time - looking back it was a bit bizarre that the building had a big sign on it saying Special Air Service etc ) and we had to say a password at the door. The SAS geezers gave us the runaround every time but we thought we was special - impressionable teenagers .

We all wanted to be SAS of course! As i grew up a bit I realised that it wasn't all romantic hero stuff and sometimes it hurt, you could scrape your knees and elbows and everything - didn't like that idea too much!!

so moved south so I could be a softie without too much shame

I know that, but I also know a couple of them and they get a little stroppy about it at times so I thought I'd give them their own section.

I was in the Air Force for 17 years as a Electronics Tech for airfields. Really this means all the navigation and radar bits on a airfield. Plus anything else electronic not to do with aircraft. I worked with the Rock Apes (RAF Regiment)for 2 of the years which I loved and I did 5 years on Tactical Communications Wing. Plus other odd bits. I took the money and ran in the end (volintary redunancy).

Have you seen/heard about Wildenrath lately.

If you zoom in on google earth you can see where thay have dug up the runway and replaced it with a high speed train testing track, a bit like a hornby train set only 300 times the size !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i notice that the RAF appears to be the most "popular" choice on here.
