hmm i see what you're saying, but the wider you are positioned the earlier you will see him start to pull out, and the further he has to go before hitting you.

I might go past a line of traffic at 60+mph, but i would be at the far right of the opposite lane, and would feel alot safer than doing 30mph right next to the cars i was overtaking.

On that road you'd be waiting a fricken long time. I ride it regularly its always heaving with traffic. Its a 4 or 5 mile stretch of road, its wide and well surfaced.

Personally I reckon you'd have come off alot worse than the guy in the video did in those circumstances, I wouldnt like to ride at 60 or 70mph into the side of a Ford Focus that decided it was doing a U turn right in front of just as I was about to come level with it, Look how the focus ended up, it was parked right across both lanes, the A pillar is across the white line demarking the middle of the road, the bonnet is out in the opposite carrigeway.

You might have hit the wing and gone over the bonnet using your technique and you'd have been going alot faster.

Edit - heres a screen grab of where the focus was when it finally stopped moving forward, look where the cats eyes are that are marking the middle of the road and then look at how much of the car is in the opposite carrigeway...

I dont think there was anything that much wrong with what he was doing, he was out wide when the traffic allowed and going up the middle when the opposite lane wasnt clear, look how he approached that roundabout when it went two lanes into one, he didnt barge down the middle of the traffic he sat and waited. So he IMHO was clearly thinking about what he was doing. He wasnt doing an inappropriate speed either, he was matching sensibly the speed of the traffic around him.

Filtering is always a risk, the only way to avoid risk is not to filter and I'm not going to sit in a big queue of traffic.

How can you say he wasn't doing much wrong? He and his pillion are lying on their arses in the road. Yes the car driver was a tw*t, but the rider chose to put him and his pillion at risk and has to take responsibiliy.

After the accident there are no oncoming cars for ages - you could have overtaken millions of cars then.

His life, his choice, his risk, same goes for pillion you know what might happen when you get on a bike, sometimes it does. The only way to avoid risk is to not ride.

So repeat the scenario again, you've seen theres no cars coming so you pop into the other lane at 60 - 70mph, theres another car 1/2 mile down the road thats been sat in stationary traffic for 20 minutes or so and the driver is f*cked off and frustrated.

He's had even less time to see you because now your not doing a sedate speed your out in the opposite lane giving it the berries. Your closing speed is greater, your braking distance is greater, he U turns right across in front of you, only you cant stop because you're doing 60mph, you're out in the opposite lane to the right almost riding into the gutter, but he still keeps rolling forward. You've the following choices

1. Go round to the left of the car thats now blocking the road and smack into the back of the car in front of it.

2. Panic brake and hit the side of the car

3. Try and go round the front of it, either hit the car as its still moving fowards or take the verge on the right.

All of that at what say 45 - 50mph, maybe less maybe more, I dont fancy your chances much....

+1

even *if* you were more likely to have an accident filtering like the guy in the video, I'd rather hit a u-turning vehicle thrice at 10mph than once at 60...

I would like to think with a decent solicitor would be able to put the case that the biker was filtering so carefully that there was nothing he could do & win 100%
+2 im just glad this biker was only going slow and being careful i wont show this to the missus as she rides pillion quite often and i dont want to put her off ( or do i lol)

How ironic. This happened to me this morning. Although I did not get knocked off, by my quick reactions and a whole heap of luck.

Traffic all the way down the A4 was stationary. Found out a short while later the reason why*. I was well over on the other side of the road, with right indicator on. No on coming traffic. All of a sudden a van swerved straight across the road just as I was about to pass. He obviously got bored with waiting and decided to do a u-turn. No indication or anything. I swerved and just managed to slip through between his front bumper and the kerb. It was F**k*ng close. Kn*b head.

*A flood last night. Traffic driving through the standing water threw water spray across the road. It froze over night leaving the road a sheet of ice. Truck has gone over this ice and jack-knifed across and then slid across the road and into a tree.

Someone did exactly the same to me a while back. ******, and it's a pain to claim without video evidence. Someone on youtube reckons you should undertake lines of traffic?? surely that's not right, I've always been told to pass on the right when possible and understand that passing on the left is risky. No cagers check their left mirror anyways.

Has anyone seen the fatal high speed headon linked from that vid. Chilling. Makes me seriously worry to share the roads with some idiots.
