Now that sounds too much like common sense so Im sure it wont catch on with the great and the good.

Problem is you would actually need to stop the car and deal with the scrote driving it.Far easier and cheaper to issue speeding fines by autopost.

i recommend a really old land rover series 2a or 3 there cheap to insure and fun to drive

YAY......some sense....ArtyLady, land rovers, especially classics are incredibly cool! To start with, can't go fast enough for the silly kids to lose control, they'll learn a huge amount about maintenance and will have LOADS of fun driving.
We have a few young lads in our Land Rover club and I tell you, they are the most skilled and intelligent young drivers I have ever met.

Best thing is, you can pick one up for a grand, do a bit of work on it, own it for 5 years and sell it for 2 grand. They hold value if you keep them the same, or rise in value of you give them some TLC and the insurance is stupidly cheap.

Even the newer ones. I was insured as the main driver on my dads 3.9 V8 Discovery when it was just 2 years old and I was just 18........less than £200 a year with 0 no claims! We did it through NFU (national Farmers Union) and it was classed as a utility vehicle, hence low cost to insure!

That's all ( but I suggest we all stay well clear of Bradford! )
When I lived in York, I would not venture into Leeds/Bradford in my own car, due to the high numbers of un-insured drivers and the generally appalling driving standards! I used to take the company car if I needed to go there. This was 10 years ago now and was just an accepted 'fact'.

WRT young drivers and insurance, I agree that the problem is the differential between the cost of insurance and the penalties for not having any. For my kids it has not been to bad, since we live in a low risk area, but my son's first premium was still £1200 in 2005 for a 1.4 Fiat Brava. The attitude of the insurance companies to young drivers is very poor, for the past 3 years Jon had to provide a copy of his driving license because they would not accept a driver of his age had no points in 3 years of driving!

I think it would be interesting to see a break down of the insurance companies income from young driver premiums against the costs, because I think they have conditioned us to expect huge premiums for young drivers and are now milking it for extra profit.

Oh no it's no problem, you send the fine to the legally registered address of the uninsured vehicle, which is fine provided it's not on false plates or it's details aren't up to date... Which obviously never happens when people are running hooky details.

Not really......get a diesel and you get great MPG.....get a petrol and you can find them easily that have LPG conversions now, so you also get a road tax saving too!

EDIT: Incidentally.....Dan and I are conducting a little experiment at the moment with the discovery. We have been putting an additive in with the diesel and also, putting the more expensive diesels in from only main stations like BP, Shell, Texaco etc, rather than supermarket fuel. So far so good.....seems to be increasing the mileage we get on each tank!

I can understand the financial side of it, but if you can't afford it don't do it.

I can't afford my car insurance, and don't enjoy driving a cage so I don't do it.

Surely a landrover wouldn't have cheap insurance? That's one to consider for my next cage...
