I've seen it occur. Neutral loses earth at substation, difference between neutral wire and phase can rise to as much as 440v depending on the load balance.
Modern housing doesnt have decent metal pipework to act as a local ground anymore.

cheers for the further info, the developments so far are...

HASTE a subcontractor to EDF have come and removed all the damaged equipment where possible, and will retun with it either repaired or new items hopefully by the end of this week.

I have always known about surge protectors, but never bothered with them being quite expensive but I guess I can now see the benefit, my biggest fear now is the fact that if we had not been in it could have quite easily been much worse.

About 20 houses in the village were effected,

Interestingly EDF do not admit liability, despite the effort to assist, the give you a nice leaflet to say that they are going beyond thier legal duties by doing what they are doing and as such wont pay out compensation for stuff like eating out or having washing done elsewhere,

Still if EDF fail...I am fully covered by my insurance...
