Quick update
Been busy with work but managed to do a couple of jobs earlier today. I've overhauled the front caliper, compressed air worked but not in the way i'd hoped. Piston just came out with a loud pop rather than resembling a mortar ![]() The carb was taken off a while ago and when it came to looking inside the bowl for the gunge ![]() The main fun and games i've been having is with the tank. After trying the new key 100x and not getting any joy, I threatened it with the drill and miraculously it turned. The filler cap was not for budging though, rusted shut! Stuck the oil filter wrench over the top and off it popped. ![]() Drained the fuel which looked more like red diesel to me ![]() Stared down into the pit of doom ![]() I shook it like a polaroid picture (and this came out) ![]() Not good. I know what this calls for, jumped in the car and off to Tescos. Have it on good authority that vinegar will bring my tank back to life so I picked up some ![]() Ok 15 bottles. 13p each! ![]() Thats all gone in the tank about an hour ago, along with a few nuts and bolts to help scrape some of the worst of the rust off. Will see the results this time tomorrow. New plug and air filter have gone in and new battery is now on charge, really hoping that it'll cough and splutter into life tomorrow ![]() Dave |

A cheaper way to remove the rust from that tank would have been Cheapo Cola. Just yer run of the mill Tesco Value rubbish Cola is fine. It contains phosphoric acid, which does a good job of eating loose light rust away. You only need to buy about 5 big bottles of the stuff to fill a DTR tank and it does a better job than vinegar.

Ah Lozzo, have you not seen that episode of mythbusters where they said coke wont shift serious rust? Does have phosphoric acid in but not enough of it. Besides the vinegar cost me the bank busting amount of £1.95
![]() Anyway here are the results, before and after ![]() ![]() Fairly pleased with the results, I can see metal at least ![]() Will do that but in the meantime, decided im going to save the bodywork and replace all of it with old stuff I can source locally or off ebay. So in 6 days time I should have a decent tank off eBay ready for respraying. For £11! Gotta love eBay ![]() |

I seen that episode of mythbusters, every scenario they tested coke in, the equivalent cleaner performed much better, which surprised me as I had heard all the things it was supposed to work well on.
Anyway, good work so far, keep it up ![]() |
