I have never bought a comprehensive set of any tool. Although I own loads. For sockets I have sets by Snap On, Teng, Bahco and a no name in 3/4". I still have my dads King **** whitworth sockets. Spanners include Snap On, Britool, Teng, etc. torque wrenches in 3/4", 1/2" and 1/4" drives by Britool.
My micrometers are imperial, Moore & Wright 0-5", I see no point in buying metric when it is a simple enough calculation. The same with my mercer bore gauge. I think the morel is buy the best you can afford, look after them and they should last you a lifetime. A few years ago I lost a 10mm snap-on combination spanner I nearly cried. I had owned it since I was working on Chevron cars in the 70s.

Ended up with a bahco 1/2" set, £50.
Looking at 1/4" stuff, was thinking draper expert but the teng t1460 set is calling out to me...

It's decent from what I've seen, we had sets when I worked for fabricators, they lived with grinding and lots of concrete, lasted well, didn't break. Caveat, the ratchets didn't get abuse. The sockets and T bar/wrenches did. Never had a failure except for a 22mm socket that exploded with a breaker bar and a 4' scaf pole on it, fair play. The sockets are nice, knurled bit on them for easy spinning with oily fingers. Accurate 6 point pattern that doesn't round stuff. Nice matt finish. We see how they last, give me a nudge in 6 months ![]()

BTW do I really need 1/2, 3/8, and 1/4 in set or 1/2 and 1/4 will do me?? Also looking for torque wrench, so which size/sizes do I go for? Any other essential tools I need to buy? Sorry for being a pain but I'm limited on funds and don't want to buy things that I will not use but also don't want to end up in need for some tool half way through the job. Is that the set you have got? ![]() Last edited by alfa.rbt; 06-11-11 at 10:38 AM. |

The plastic of the ratchet handle becomes ingrained from oily hands and can never be cleaned properly. As for needing different sizes, Most people can get by with a 1/2" drive 10-32mm and a good 1/4" drive covering 5-13mm but be careful over torquing on the 1/4" drive. If like me you are a bit of a tool junkie, you also want deep versions of your sockets. Plus allen, torx (internal&external) etc.
