Triumph have a bad history for reliability and mud sticks.

John Bloor bought the name in the early 80's and spent the next 10-15 years putting lots of money into the company and building the current factory at Hinckley. This is what people mean when they refer to Hinckley Triumphs.

Anything mid 90's onwards from Triumph like t595 or tt600 are well built and very reliable. The 1050 engine problems were teething issues on a brand new engine.

You should have no concerns about buying a Street Triple.

Triumph Triple engines such as the early 955i's were to take on the might of Honda VFR's and many say that they succeeded. A vast amount of time money and energy was spent loosing the old image of the Meridian factory but prior to it being burnt down in 2001[?] the models that came out of the factory had the highest production standards due to the challenge to Honda. The interim period between 2001-2003/4 had some quality control issues due to the amount of work sub contracted while the
new factory came on line.

I am estimating by your budget/trade in/sale of your existing bike that you will not be within the "Interim"period so the later 675's 800's and 1050's are all good reliable bikes. As a commuter either a 675 or a 800 would be ideal as you are not likely to be well outside the speed limits on a daily basis.
Like any purchase the choice is yours at the end of the day but very few people have major complaints regarding Triumph reliability and build quality.
I have a 2001 Sprint and apart from "Proper" maintenance my only problems have been a snapped gear rod[tack weld repair],snapped clutch cable and a duff battery after 7 years. My bike is 50+k miles and 12 years old [it was 2 Years old when I bought it with 12k on the clock] no rust or flaking on any paintwork still doing 50mpg and minimal oil usage,200ml between 6000 mile services.
Yes I would recommend a Triumph triple and hope you get one as good as mine

Bike recovered to rocket centre Blackburn who found the issue as a melted connection under the tank (common aprilia fault apparently) and a ignition fault £195 was the cost to which I had to pay as the AA said firstly they don't cover electrics?? (Handy on a motorbike I thought) and secondly the ignition had been tampered with so wouldn't cover it!!! To which I told them there mechanic had done but surprisingly they checked and he told them he didn't try to bypass it but that it was already like that!!! So I ended up telling them to shove there cover where the sun don't shine and that in my opinion they will always try to get out of paying it!! Sorry to go off topic and for the long story but just wanted to give you the heads up, but I'm sure others will have good story's about them as well
Good to know but mine covers electrics too, weirdly...I had this exact problem with the SV a couple of weekends ago but the cover wasn't active yet. When I took the cover out with the AA, they specifically said it'll cover anything mechanical AND electrical. But this is good to know, if anything happens then I'll tell them not to bother bypassing and all that ****

So I bought a Triumph Street Triple R...2010 plate with 4000 miles on the clock. It's pretty standard minus the following:

Screen and Belly pan which are colour coded
Fender Extender and rear hugger
Acerbise Handguards...I'll be adding heated grips soon as well
R&G Radiator protector
R&G Toe guard
Bar risers for a comfier ride
Metzeler tyres, Z8 front and M5 rear

Gonna add frame sliders and fork protectors along with a rear fork protector...I'm picking it up this weekend, cannot wait...the triple engine is incredible!

Going to go for a full S/S exhaust with K&N filter and will get it remapped, good for another 9bhp together which will be nice...more pics to follow when I've picked it up
