not sure if you have thought of this but, say you do 150 miles by 5.30 am having left at 3.30am are you going to be able to refuel at that time of day? or are you going to end up getting to a fuel station and end up stuck there till 8 am and miss your ferry?
i find riding in the dark really takes it out of me, how many miles will be in the dark? leaving that time of day your evening before is going to be a bit boring aswell because you will either be in bed early or clock watching thinking s**t im only going to get x amount of hours sleep, i would get a later ferry in all honesty or split like someone else said and leave 8 the night before to check into a hotel a third of the way , |

Glen Innes to Melbourne, 1020 miles in 16 hours, would never try that distance again.

I've ridden 1000-1300 miles in a day several times and I am not hardcore by any means
the most miles I've done in a day was my BBG last June when I rode from Newinton, New Hampshire to Joplin, Missouri, 1545 miles in 23 hours, 5 minutes, on the 4½ day trip, I did a total of 4200 miles I did in on my V-strom 1000, stock seat, keys to long distance comfort are havng bike setup ergonomicly, and the right underwear |

I did Ullapool to Dorchester in a day - 19 hrs it took me, with 1 hr for lunch (in Ft William?) Ran out of petrol stations on the way down and did 70 miles to Dunbarton from Crianlarich at caravan speed - just scraped it! Got lost and went RIGHT through Glasgow in the rush hour, overheated on the M6, went through the lakes for the sake of sanity and then squared off the back tyre on the motorway til just south of Bristol. By the time I got back it was three in the morning and if anything had gone in front of me I would probably have just gone straight into it!
Do what I didn't - plan your ride beforehand - but take breaks or you may well fall asleep. At least you'll be tired in the daytime. Good luck! And enjoy the GP! Last edited by carternd; 16-12-09 at 08:50 PM. Reason: Spelling! |

Good one. You must have had the throttle control of a saint to ride down from Crianlarich like that.
![]() See I have been riding a long time and have never had the experience of doing a daft "got to do mega mileage." (I like enjoying my bike holidays!....and planning them...) Portsmouth to Glasgow leaving at about 7.30pm and riding into the wee small ours was maybe the closest I have come to going, "Not doing that again!" Got a chill in my chest even after stopping at every service station to get more layers on/hot food. The damage had been done! In the back of my mind I have the tale of my normally sensible mate who road from Northernish France to Glasgow in one hit on a TZR250 and had to keep stopping for naps on the grass at service stations. I suppose if you don't have the experience you think runs like these are perfectly do-able. Last edited by STRAMASHER; 17-12-09 at 08:30 AM. Reason: gramma bad |

Daft?! Try this...
Dec 3/4, 1300mi sprint home on the SV to pick up the other bike and a pile of gear and grab a couple of hours sleep. Dec 4, I hit the road and 24hrs later I was 1809mi down the road (target was 3000km/1864mi), grabbed two hours sleep at 26hrs & 1968mi from home then rode another 850mi in 15hrs (including a tyre change and 240mi of desert tracks) to my destination. Dec 6 & 7, I spent doing what needed to be done then rode back into town on the 7th for another tyre change, refuel and a nights sleep. Mileage was 479mi (all on desert tracks) for the two days. Dec 8, back on the bike at 7am for the 2571mi trip home. After a first leg 1553mi and one 4hr break for sleep, I was in my own bed 41 hours later. 7165mi in 7 days to do 2 days work... I get called on for one of these fools errands at least once a year. About that 1809mi day. A few friends and I are chasing the 3000km/1864mi in 24 hour milestone. My best to date is 1841mi which was done last year. Last weeks ride was a milestone in itself because I was hauling a (uni) trailer and 110kg of gear. Three of the group are having another crack at it next week starting in Esperance and finishing in Halls Creek where we'll all meet for the Christmas party. I'll also be taking another shot at it next week from Port Augusta to Halls Creek and may have the company of another rider. My maximum cruising speed on such runs is 145kph/90mph. I did 880miles in 13hrs on the SVthou.
To cover a big distance you need: - good weather, it really would be difficult/grim/dangerous in the wet. - to have mapped out fuel stops, plan on 120-140miles to a tank at 80-90mph. The fuel was the biggest killer for me, on the autoroutes across france I had no idea where the next stop was and if I was turning off the road etc... . Also, try to have a quiet day before and after. |
