Ok, I have to admit to being a bit thick as far as the oil leak is concerned. Dave, you are spot on, excess oil. The previous owner had fitted a new oil filler cap, with a dip stick, which was reading fine. It wasn't until my haynes manual arrived yesterday, that I realised that I should have been reading the sight glass. In my defence though, I didn't get an owners manual, & my bike is fully faired, so you can't see the sight glass until you take that off! Front sprocket got fitted yesterday, so glad I checked it, the locking nut wasn't even hand tight, and was only being held in place by the tab on the washer being hand tight. Just got to do the rear sprocket, fit the chain & drain some oil, then I'll be a happy man

Fair enough! Some honda's actualy have a dipstick, earlier VFR's I know for sure do...but most (all?) motorcycles now have a sight glass. Maybe you should cut a hole in the fairing to make it easy to check your oil...you could do this with a dremel Saves you having to take off the fairing each time you need to check your oil level (which should be regularly, at least once a week if you use your bike a couple of times a week or every other day if you use it every day)
