I was under the impression that restrictions and lower capacity bikes were to gain experience on before being unleashed with a 1000cc projectile. Surely it is better to build up gradually than dive in the deep end, possibly with disastrous results

I know the law was changed from when I sat my test as I passed on a 125cc Honda Dream and went out and got a 650cc straight away which wasn't my best move and ended up reverting to a 250cc Honda Dream for a year

I had my 125 cruiser for over a year before I eventually went out and did my DAS.
A whole 12 BHP..lol. The only time I got embarrassed by speed was when the fat lump couldn't beat a 50cc moped up a steep hill!
Even after that I didn't think ' I must have full power bike now!'.
After passing my DAS it was a fair old while before I sold it and got on Suzy, IIRC I was bikeless for a short while inbetween. So I had a full license and a 125 so what!!

Were there a lot of "Idiot Rich Kids" passing their test, getting a sportsbike and killing themselves?

And it does nothing for the rich non teenagers on their 3 day direct access course. And 2 years? That's ages if you're commuting everyday epecially if you've already been tooling around on peds and 125s.

Insurance takes care pretty much of what you ride to start off with anyway.

And ofcourse you can jump in any ton plus vehicle with your mates from 17.

Least on a bike the chances are the only person you're likely to damage is yourself.

Edit: Crikey - caught the wrong side of the bed bug

Apparently so. Some European statistics somewhere had a lot of fatalities in the young rider/powerful bike segment.

At least this is what I vaguely remember reading as justification when it was brought in, so I won't vouch for its accuracy.
