Seeing what size of machine you're after the SV comes as a thousand too you know and they are great bikes.

or am i the last person on the SV forum that actually still likes SVs? lol.
That's what I was going to suggest from the OP but I see it's whole heartedly discounted.
I'm at a bit of a loss for a recommendation that's not been made.

The short ride you had on it wouldn't give you a real world idea of what its like to live with. You're welcome to borrow it for an extended test ride if you like, because I can't ride it until after my operation in April.

For what it's worth, I love the bike and can't think what I'd buy to replace it apart from another '09 model Versys in all black.

You're right to some degree: my mind is a bit set on the BMW or Tedium at the moment as on paper they seem to tick 90% percent of all my boxes (Beemer ticks a couple of boxes more). However, I am open to other suggestions and definitely do appreciate all the recommendations everyone has kindly given.
If I seem to be picky, it's only because the bike I plan to buy is going to be the most expensive thing I will have ever bought and at the same time me and Kate want to save up a deposit for a flat so money has to be parted with wisely. Also taking into consideration my recent accidents, it is very important that the bike I buy helps me rebuild my confidence and helps me enjoy riding again rather than put me off two wheels.....

Three recommendations I will definitely try are the Bandit 1250GT (Thanks Fizzwheel), Aprilia Shiver (dzieki Dyzio) and the Vstrom (Thanks TLW). Paul's suggestion of the XJR1300 wasn't too far of the point but I'm scared of the 230kg dry weight (!)...

Many thanks for the offer Lozzo. Although the ride was short, the versys did feel like a nice bike. I would prefer to keep the original height as yours felt a bit like a chopper for me The suspension felt much much better than on the SV but one thing it seemed to luck for me was a the initial torque hit I used to get on my SV at around 3.5K revs. I hope my leg wil be good enough to get back in the saddle towards the end of March so if I don't buy anything else before, I might take you up on your offer.

PS Keeping my fingers crossed for your health getting back to normal soon.
