You can go as far as you like to an MOT station aslong as its pre-booked but make sure you have enough fuel. Don't stop for food or drink...

Here's an idea, whilst they are MOT 'in it! Find the local post office and then you can get the certificate and pop down there on foot or jump in a cab, get the tax and then make your way bk to the MOT place, I'm sure they won't mind looking after it for 15mins.
