By now you'll probably need to remove the fork tubes completely, then compress the spring and keep the fork cap square to the thread screw it in. Careful not to cross thread the cap! You'll need new stantions if you do that.

Looks like i'll need to give up then. I don't have the tools to compress the spring properly and with the front end a foot off the ground it wasn't decompressing itself.

I'll get a quote tomorrow.

are the forks at full extension? if you cant get the caps on i very much doubt it. what has probably happened is that the tube are stuck in the stanchions which will need you to push down wheel or fork bottoms to free them. once they are at full extension the caps should go on no problem.

another thing you will have to do is top the oil level back up and set the air gap.

once you have fixed the bike may i suggest that you take what ever tools you have down to the nearest charity shop and hand them in

I reckon the fork tubes have dropped to the stops in the fork lowers and are stuck there. If that's the case the wheel could be off the ground but the forks are still compressed. Is there much chrome showing between the top of the dust seal and bottom yoke?

As toxic says, probably best now to remove the forks. If you've lost some fork oil the level will now be too low so I'd take the opportunity to just change the oil.

If you don't want to give up just yet I could come up with an Abba stand tomorrow night and we'd have it sorted in a couple of hours.

EDIT: I was typing as Bibio replied. Great minds think alike!

An alloy cap is very unlikely to knacker a steel thread.

Because it will be in bottom out stops which stick a bit.

Get front in air and give the hex on the end of the spindle a boink downwards with a rubber mallet.

All you need to compress spring is hand pressure.

Default UPDATE, PAGE 5. TamSV is awesome.

Ok guys, just an update here. TamSV drove over an hour each way tonight and sorted all my problems within an hour and a half. He decompressed the forks, and even changed the fork oil for me while i stood there holding a drainage bucket lol. He also even refused to accept petrol money for the trip. Great guy, I would have been looking at a large bill to get this fixed without his help. I appreciate it mate.

Now i don't want to insult you by bringing it up again but at least let me paypal you the petrol money for the trip mate as it is a bit of a distance?

Just goes to show what a top forum this is, tam just backs this up, top work

Seriously, glad you got it sorted mate, only advice I'd give, do some research before attempting your next mod, not having a dig or anything, but it saves a lot of problems in the long run.

Plenty of good knowledgeable people on here to give advice how to do things so theres no need to attack them blind.
