Without meaning to come across as a raving BNP loony or a Daily Mail columnist, an awful lot of the jobs that require good hard physical labour are filled by migrant workers, and because some locals won't work hard for the minimum wage, but Wladek will, the employers won't give them a look in. I have customers who refuse point blank to hire a local because they want more money to do the same work, but the Polish chaps that all share the one house to save money on living costs are happy enough with minimum wage and have enough left for a few vodkas and a few quid stashed away for when they go back to Poland.

Because they don't have to. Take away the dole money and they'll have to.

Everyone has to make hard choices in life, and if TW's son has to rent a room in a shared house, or pay his parents digs, because he can't afford a pad of his own on what he earns, then it's up to him to work hard and better himself.

When I got my first job minimum wage hadn't been introduced so I earned way less than that, and I was living in a shared house with mould growing up the walls, silverfish in the bathroom, mice everywhere, and carpets and sofa's that would get a landlord struck off the register on health grounds nowadays, and eating beans on toast made with Tesco's value bread at 19p a loaf, and beans at 7p a tin!

I had to read the title twice just to make sure this wasn't another anti police rant

ooohhh look we are back to bashing the dole scroungers. FFS people. a LOT of the people on the dole are there as there are NO JOBS, get it.

people are being laid off left right and centre but some ash00les still think that its easy to get a job, well news flash its not. another thing is some of the people who are long term dole scroungers are actually unemployable for the simple fact that they have no qualifications, their face dont fit or they live at the wrong address and they have been on the dole that long that employers see tham as lazy feckers.

yes some of these so called dole scroungers are just that but what would you prefer... they go out and steel to make ends meet?

if you think its easy making ends meet on the dole with spiraling prices then go and try it its not feckin easy. how would you survive on £67.50 a week as a single person over 25?

so can those people who think its easy on the dole just remember one thing. IT MIGHT BE YOU NEXT. so STFU about unemployed people.

annnnnd someone has just missed the point completely.

No where has anyone said that EVERYONE on the dole is a work shy scrounger. I think we are intelligent enough to realise that some people are there through no choice of their own!

Nonsense Lance, if the Polish lads can find a job, so can everyone else. When was the last time you walked into a job centre and didn't see a single card on the wall? There are loads of unskilled jobs there that pay minimum wage if people want to find them. Trouble is the redundant welder goes into the job centre and looks at the cards - cleaner, bartender, road sweeper, grass cutter, pizza delivery. Most McDonalds are always recruiting. But he walks out saying there are no jobs, 'cos none of the cards said "welder". Dole dossers as someone said earlier, just refuse to do these kind of jobs.

Being on jobseekers would never be a problem for me because even if there were no IT jobs, I'd be doing something else within six weeks to keep some cash rolling in whilst I looked for an IT job. I've done my time collecting the dustbins and I'd do it again if I had to. There's somebody out there who needs your help and is prepared to pay you for it if you look hard enough.

As for qualifications, how many night classes and free education schemes do you need? If you want to get some qualifications, an NVQ in catering for instance, that's within anyone's reach too.

Don't take it personally, nobody is bashing those who have just been made redundant, or are full time carers, or are disabled, etc, etc.

Just to add a little to this as the "welder" made me think of my old man and the part you said you would find other work to make ends meet while finding another job within your trade,
I was having this conversation with Seggons the other day actually.

My dad worked as a fabricator for the same company for 13 years and just over a year and a half ago he was made redundant.
Within 3 weeks he bagged a job pushing trolleys in ASDA working the hours 6pm to 12pm Monday-Friday and 8am to 2pm Saturdays.

His old employers after 5 months called him back and gave him back his job but advised they wouldnt know how long the work would last, he was put on the same same hours he used to work 8am to 5pm Monday-Friday

due to the fear of him getting layed off he kept the job at ASDA and is still doing it to this day this is nearly 2 years down the line.

So Monday to Friday my dad works 8am to 12pm and eats his main meal while driving from one job to the other.

Total off 86 hours a week 6 days a week, every week for the last 18-20 or so months.
