But in a car if something does actually grab your attention you can mute or turn it down very easily.

Personally I have a set of custom molded earplugs which work a treat. I also have speakers in the helmet for when I use Satnav or B2B radios and they go loud enough to be audible with plugs in but still no wind noise.

I tried music when I started out but it was not for me. I do however sing to myself and I can assure you I sound amazing but air-guitar gets a tad tricky on the bendy bits of the road.

I wouldnt listen to music whilst riding id consider it to be a dangerous distraction. What would be the insurance implications?

I've tried, but I fine riding is too focused for me, even with adequate volume I zone it out and it becomes just a noise, in order to actually hear it I have to concentrate on it, which takes away for riding focus, so slowing down and less aware, not something I like to do.

I can see the point if traveling miles on the motorway, but I tend to make my journeys more interesting and avoid the boring roads where possible.

Cheers Mark.

I got them off ebay - item number 180709535520 - there's a list of which tips fit which model earphones on that listing too. If you want me to post you a pair, I can do for £5 (incl. postage). They're really good, you fit them on and then roll them around, like normal foam plugs, before putting into your ear, hold while they expand (or put your lid on) and hey presto, earphoneplugs!

Why not?

Hence why I rode with my phone on an armband, I could easily turn down if needed, plus my headphones have a volume control which I 'clip' into the velcro fastener at the top of my leather jacket, which I can access very easily without taking my eyes off the road.

But you do it whilst driving? I don't have the music on that loud, it doesn't need to be with the setup I have. I can still easily hear horns/sirens, noisy trucks etc.

I 'listen' to music whilst studying/working/driving/riding/training....I'm not really listening, I just find it makes me more focussed on what I'm doing, half the time I don't even remember what songs have been on when I've been doing any of the activities above.

I tend to sing one song over and over again.

I must remember to ebay some helmet speakers when I can be bothered..

Why is everyone so shocked? It's commonplace, almost a done thing?
Probably over 60,000 miles under the wheels here to a heavy metal soundtrack.

Personally I find even on a decent twisty road unless I have someone good to chase then I switch right off, back off the throttle and just bimble. Add metal. Go faster and concentrate better which ends up being safer.

Just seems a bit mental to me. I don't even wear headphones when walking down the road as my spacial awareness is reduced for sure.

Compared to being completely deafened by wind noise, while the gaping maw of the airbox right under your nose is snorting in thousands of litres of air, and a completely open race pipe behind you resonating the world.

Don't think the mp3 even registers compared to that glorious racket TBH
