OK, he was joking on the breathless bit but would any of us seriously go to our GP beforehand? "Dr, I'm a fatso but otherwise have no medical issues and I'm thinking of taking up exercise. What do you think?". "Get on with it fatso! Now get out of my surgery and don't come back with any more stupid questions!!".

I agree with the others about the gym/swimming being a bit boring but the target idea has worked for me. Lengths of the pool in so many minutes, weights on the resistance machines... Also, the classes in my local gym are well attended and varied and having others around you makes you work harder - mix the classes up a bit to stop getting bored with the same one over and over.

I start my next boot camp tomorrow at 6:50am. I had my pre-assessment last night and have set some goals such as 5% reduction in body fat.

Tonight I will be at Muay Thai getting sweaty with some other dudes (repeat on Thursday) and Saturday I'll be at circuit training doing squats, mountain climbers, kettle bell stuff and generally sweating and wanting to puke.

The bootcamp is a charity thing that is for 3 weeks and I'll probably only manage 2 x early morning sessions each week. That will be fine if I keep up the Tues/Thurs Muay Thai class and circuit training. After bootcamp has finished, I'll be looking to get to the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes again with my youngest lad. He's getting better at it now and is starting to pose a real risk around the house (think Kato for those old enough to get the reference).

Try lots of different sports and then settle on one or two that you enjoy. Set some goals and give it a go.
