Just kicked myself.

Red Herring.

It has nothing to do with the price of fuel, even if the existing road tax was removed and a supplement was put onto the pump price so that an average motorist still paid the £120/year or whatever in extra duty, it does not address the main problem i.e. too many vehicles on the road. If the fuel price goes up people will pay it (OK, it does solve the road tax evasion problem), it will hurt but they will pay it. It won't cut down the number of vehicles choking our towns.

I remember some time ago the Greek government cracked down on pollution in Athens by legislating that vehicles with odd or even numbered plates were allowed in the city on alternate days.

I don't know what the solution is short of banning privately owned vehicles from urban areas (but that won't generate revenue) and French style toll roads.

I think a cull of 30% of the population would solve the problem.Bring back transportation. If I stole a loaf of bread do you think they would transport me to Australia? Please.

This is one of the few things I'd be prepared to go to prison for. Put a black box on my bike and I'll rip it off and chuck it in the nearest skip. There is no way I'm prepared to live in a so-called "free" society and have every single movement logged.

There are several things I'd go to prison for... If someone touched my wife or my kids, (or called my SV a girls bike ) I'd be doing a very long time inside

I don't think this would be one of them TBH...

How long until someone figures out some sort of PC based device that lets you detach the daft black box and leave it at home while you go out for a drive/ride. You'll probably even be able to connect it to autoroute so it thinks you were out of the Country at the time... Just wait...

Just as at the moment, if you don't have a transmitter you'll get caught at check points. It would be like driving without a number plate.
