There are charges of careless cycling, drunk cycling, dangerous cycling...not that I have ever actually managed to use them.
Dunno... maybe a slight adjustment to the law, or a change in its interpretation.
FWIW, in these parts a bicycle is defined in the act and have the same obligations (plus a few extra and a few privileges) as other road users and as such cyclists can be charged with all of the same offences as drivers of motorised vehicles with the same penalties including licence suspension whether the offender has one or not.

...

As for insurance... make sure that your insurance covers the uninsured without penalty. There are probably more cars on the road without insurance than there are bicycles and that would be of greater concern.

What do you not know?

Cyclists need to obey the rules of the road or they can be reported or issued with non-endorsable fixed penalty notices.

Ah, okay... somehow I got the impression that the law in this area was a bit weak. The "dunno" is in this case a preface to a comment that I really don't much have an idea of what I am talking about because I am not there and it doesn't affect me... The following comment was thrown up as a hypothetical based on the impression.

Okay, lots of complaining in the thread about how cyclists seem to get away with everything. You describe charges and say:

"There are charges of careless cycling, drunk cycling, dangerous cycling...not that I have ever actually managed to use them."

which if I were to believe the complaints and there is a widespread problem could suggest in some twisted moment of my imagination a weakness in the law (that happens) making it difficult to enforce the rules of the road on cyclists. I think that I read too much into it.

Can I just make the point that I am a cyclist, sometimes ride like a T%$^, nearly got knocked off running a red light. I also pull over to let cages past on single-track lanes, and have only good things to say about cagers. They DO seem to treat me with consideration, but still pull out in front of me. Maybe it's living in the sticks, but I just don't get the antipathy. Oh, riding like a K*&bhead makes me get back feeling like one, consideration for others improves my mood. Is that the same for others too?
