If your going to do that be expecting it and be ready to swerve onto the hard shoulder if you need to. Best not to at all TBH as the hard shoulder could disappear for a section, or there could be a broken down vehicle sitting on it, just when you need it as an escape route.
Being a HGV 1 driver myself, I wouldn't even consider it.

I was a total company car speed demon, my house to a hotel in Barnstaple, 3 hours no problem... Then I became white van man, but the van had a speed limiter. 69MPH on the speedo, 63MPH according to my prat nav.
Drive with your foot flat on the floor, makes no difference same speed.
Then you start to notice, you catch up with the speed demons, traffic holds them and their 3rd lane hogging mates up...
So then I change job and the current white van has no limiter and after I train myself not to bury the accelerator everywhere I go. I've slowed down, but I still reserve the right to pass people on bends, there really are 2 kinds of drivers. Those that can only drive on straight roads and those who wish they were actually on their bike.

You can always tell drivers who wish they were on their bike Corner position is a right giveaway, and they look over their shoulder

Anyway I don't have to put up with CCD (company car driver) tomorrow as I'm at home and I can have a lie in

Its not half as bad as it sounds. I'm really quite a poosy when it comes to taking risks, so I'm not doing it unless I consider it safe. Not making people brake or change course either (well, not dramtically or unpredictably).

The amount of times traffic is flowing but there people leave massive gaps between the vehicle in front.

What about old people driving with hats on, they're the worst no question. They don't even notice when you fold their offside wing mirrors in, to get past them. They're a special breed - a type of driver with charecteristics all of their own.

Driving with a hat on is excellent, it keeps your head warm when you wind the window down to shout at youngsters.
