Now that I have had a fair bit of time in the saddle I think I can say that the SV was a fair bit more punchy up to 6k rpm than my 636 so I'd imagine CBR's/GSXR's and the R6 are even worse.

Not allowed to go over 6k yet so I can't compare them from that point onwards.

Nah, it just comes down to what amuses you. I testrode a CBR600RR, and it was too good, it made me feel incompetent. Corners that feel fast and demanding on the SV just skim past... The SV screams SLOW DOWN but you carry on... The CBR just yawns, because it's better that you.

That makes me chuckle, and i would have to agree, i kinda liked the look of the CBR600F...but maybe my dream VFR should be the next stepping stone. Its so easy to go out and get a really powerful bike and think you have the skills to handle it...you start questioning your BSB riding skills as you scream into a bend too fast...yes i see you all nodding, been there done it and truly scared yourself half to death lol.

That reminds me. I was a naughty boy on Friday. Only done 610 miles but figured I would take it the red line just once before its first service. Hopefully won't have done any harm.

Didn't fancy any wheelies so came off a roundabout at about 30mph in 3rd gear then opened her up. I should have been in 1st up to 75mph or whatever so I was way over geared and yeah the SV would have pulled a lot better in third from such a low speed and revs.

But then once it got to 100mph the rev's started to get into the zone and oh my fricking god did it go! It was doing 110 with the front wheel skipping off the road and pulling as hard as the SV did in 1st gear! It's mad cos once you get to 8000rpm its pullin as hard as the SV would but then you still have another 7000rpm left of movement on the rev counter of the thing going absolutely ballistic!

Can't wait to do it again but in 2nd gear although I am seriously sh***ing myself thinking about it!

Wait until you do this in 1st and then 2nd.. and then 3rd.. and then 4th... then its just about stopped pulling your arms off... and your front wheel still feels like its not quite making contact with the ground

hamfist the throttel in 1st... and the front WILL come up on the Kwak.... Ive gotten into the habbit of leaning over the front of the bike when I do it..

A 600 at 4000rpm is going quicker than you think, a test ride where you thrash it around may make it seem like there's nothing down low, but as I've said several times before: 40mph top gear roll on my ZX6 beats an SV, but I still hear SV owners rolling out the tired old lines "600s are gutless" "IL4s have to revved to oblivion or they stall when you pull away" - the usual bollox, just 'cos they make good power at the top doesn't mean there's nothing elsewhere, and as for numbers on the tacho, who cares? Compared to old Brit bikes an SV is revvy and flat, would an A10 be preferable, and anyway there's no work in turning a throttle so who cares what direction the needle's pointing?

Groovy, more for us who appreciate good bikes, and don't have a (wrong) stereotype.

What seems to come out of all this is that IL4 600s are better when going very fast, and twins are better going slow at low revs. Well I know what kind of riding I do around Birmingham, so the SV suits me perfectly! Its the grunt I need to just flick open the throttle at any rev range and catapult past that annoying 4x4 from 30mph to 40mph. When I upgrade, I'd still want the great twin sound and power delivery, so just get a bigger twin for me . I would love to try some of the IL4s though, but it is a totally different riding style I'd imagine, as the GSXF-750 I tried seemed pants the way I rode it.

I've been testing 600cc (slightly older) supersports bikes and this is purely my opinion, having come from an SV (only big bike) and a 125 scooter.

The CBR6 will pull virtually from idle. The ZX6R and Thundercat get a bit grumbly below maybe 3000rpm, but then so does an SV. All produce way more power than an SV and produce it in a much smoother way (less vibes). And, riden like for like, are more fuel efficient than the SV (somewhere around 10% better). The noise produced is different, a twin produces a more thudding noise to the high rev howl of the 4s, I like both. I didn't particularly like the CBR6, the one I rode was vibey and hard work compared to the others, it was probably just that bike though. And, as Mr Squid said, with mechanical reliability as good as it is these days, who cares what the tacho says? (I really want to try a CBR250, 22000rpm IL4, 40bhp and 70+mpg. With a race can, natch).

The SV has a great engine, no way am I putting it down, I have enjoyed owning one, but more power, less vibes and better fuel economy from an IL4 have swayed me.
