Nope........that ain't flame worthy Matt.
Agree a lot with that principle myself, including the first bit about your personal views on guidance!

Hasn't done me any harm believing in those principles, and I firmly believe how you better yourself with riding is a lot to do with ATTITUDE towards it.
I don't read books, I don't watch videos, I don't do track days. I just go out and ride my bike, ok its not so often anymore, but I'm lucky that I get back on after three months and although a little wibbly for five miles, I'm back on track....because my heads screwed on the right way, and I've had an awful lot of PRACTISE, of all descriptions for many years previously..........a very big factor for staying on, and only ever falling off once in my entire career....plenty of drops at a standstill though

It also helps if you get yourself in the mindset of 'nothing to prove'. We all get a bit 'puffy of the old chest feathers' every now and again, and voice opinions, but as long as you don't voice that when on the road, you'll never be of harm to yourself, or to others whilst out there.

Fair do's. I like the eyebrows reference, I may steal that and re-use.

Part of your post there Matt highlights why I went ROSPA - three yearly retests!

Nobody is suggesting joining an advanced group instantly makes you a better rider BTW. It takes on average 12-15 lessons to get someone through the test.

I agree theres no substitute for mileage, but to take a double prong attack to the problem can only be a good thing, and I reject the suggestion that the money would be 'better spent' on petrol. To benefit significantly confidence wise needs 1000+ miles which costs 200+ odd quid.

I think you need to be at the stage in your riding career where you can take and act on constructive criticism if considering an advanced course, for some people it's a lot easier to give than receive. You also need to be confident enough in your own riding skill and therefore able to understand where your weaknesses are before being put under the scrutinising eye of someone who you know is going to point out your faults. I know some would argue it's better to be scrutinised before those faults show up in the first place but this is just my view on it and how I would personally prefer to go about things.

I think he's talking about riding on the road.
