A 1970 VW Beetle bought in 1981 when I had just passed my test.....Still rate it as the best car I ever had, even though it had a flat four 35hp air cooled engine that wouldn't pull you out of bed.

1969 Mk2 Mini 1000 - bought just before I passed in 1995 so a proper classic even back then. My Dad resprayed it in 2-pack red so it looked great - 75mph top speed and positive earth so no radio until I changed the polarity! Great fun though - I remember the tiny petrol tank only holding about £8 - good times

1966 Morris Minor Traveller (WHM 833G , previously SN 1713) in Australian poverty spec and on a 1969 plate because it was imported to UK from Singapore when we first moved here. It was my dad's car and he bought it new in Singapore hence it had no heater. When my dad bought a Marina Estate he sold it to me for a tenner but it was absolutely knackered by then. It used to be Almond Green, but I sprayed it Old English White with aerosols after I'd fitted fibreglass wings all round and replaced the very dented rear panels with varnished marine ply - It looked like a shed on wheels, but I thought it looked cool. I spent 18 months rebuilding that car with every spare penny I could save, then wrote it off 2 weeks after passing my test when I hit the back of a Volvo 343 that anchored up hard for an amber traffic light. The poor old Moggy drum brakes couldn't compete and I watched the two brand new front wings shatter as my car hit the back of the Volvo. The Volvo drove away with a dented bumper - my Moggy was totalled.
I passed my car test 7 days after my 17th birthday on Good Friday April 13th 1979, I'd passed my bike test 2 days previously. I was lucky it was Good Friday, it kinda balanced out it being Friday 13th. |

Though I was going to be unlucky when the final question asked was 'what are pavements for?' Pedestrains. And?? erm.. prams And?? wheelchairs? AND?? Sorry, I dont know. So they are not for motorbikes? No, definately not. So how come I saw you and your mate riding your motorbikes on the pavement outside the test centre only last night? I was practicing my turn in the road. Still passed. |

RHP140W Mk1 Fiesta Festival 1.1 ohv. Came with fluffy grey seat covers to hidde the god awful diarrhoea brown seats. Soon swapped them for a supersport interior. I also put in the supersport dashboard and even managed to wire in the rev counter. Not bad for a wet behind the ears 18 year old! I will always remember the heater smelling of Madras!!!
