Moving from SV650 to SV1000?
Apologies if this has been posted before.
I am looking for advice on moving upto a 1000 from a 650. This might seem a strange question but are they completely different? I (now) consider the 650 a very lazy bike, great to ride but good power on tap. I need to scratch the litre itch and the sv1000 is something I would like rather than a balls out R1, Fireblade, etc. |

Re: Moving upto an SV1000
I did it 2 years on a 650 then up to the thou. I've now had my old SV1000 for 5 years and have no desire to change it. It's a right laugh!
You'll be told they don't handle. That's rubbish. Mine does! (or at least it does now I've taken the crap steering damper off) You'll be told they eat chains and tyres. That's entirely down to your right hand. You'll be told they drink fuel like it's going out of fashion. That's partially true unless you are cruising when it will probably use less. You'll be told it's bonkers. Yep. Mine's a K3 naked and I love it!

Re: Moving upto an SV1000
Of course if you've been told they are just a more powerful sv650, you might be surprised, they are a different kettle of fish,

Re: Moving from SV650 to SV1000?
It's going to feel a tad different because of its extra few ponds and more poke.
If its an itch scratch it.

Re: Moving from SV650 to SV1000?
The general consensus is that as standard the suspension is poor and the seat is uncomfortable. However, that's easily fixed - go to http://www.sv-portal.com/ and there's loads of tips and tricks to sort it. I've had one 5yrs now and it's a great bike now I've done the most common mods i.e. after-market suspension, cans, injection remap, gel seat and a dozen other tweaks. Goes and handles like a dream tbh, all day comfort and more power than you need.

I`m thinking along the same lines...wanting more power from the 650, so fancy 1000....I know if I have a test ride I`ll be hooked n want it. Whats the price difference between a 650 and a 1000, what about insurance groups.

Re: Moving from SV650 to SV1000?
i'd ride a IL4 first like a fazer1000 k6+ (i have the naked fz1) then ride the thou, i didn't think i would like the IL4 but absolutely love it and suits the way i ride down to the ground and the suspension is good on the fz's as standard

Re: Moving from SV650 to SV1000?
I wouldn't say completely different no, obviously more powerful but very similar bikes to ride.
I raced a K3 650 for 4 years and now ride a K3 SV1000 on the road. Really nice bike to ride. A race prepped bike is like chalk and cheese against standard suspension, but its as flickable as the 650. Main difference is the thou doesn't run out of puff, it just keeps accelerating. With my 650 I was full throttle and wishing for more, with this thou you have to back off much sooner its got some serious torque and acceleration. |

Re: Moving from SV650 to SV1000?
I had an itch for another bike ( not an sv, but bigger twin that did sound nice) scratched that itch and came back to the 650 as really regretted selling mine.
Admittedly I bought a slightly leftfield bike which suited my power increase needs, but selling up and buying another sv650 was the best thing for me. However, if it had been an sv1000 or tl I might think different. |
