Electrical problem

Firstly, let me apologise for my absence over the last few months.

My SV has an intermittent electrical problem.
Soemtimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't. It has cut out at constant throttle at 30mph and while accelerating and deccelerating. It can also stutter alot at low revs.

The other weekend I turned the key to the on position and got nothing. No electrics at all. No dash, no lights, nothing.

Generally when the electrics do decide to work the dash light flickers as doe the brake light and the indicators flash at the speed they want.

The battery is fine.

Any ideas, oh Mighty ORG?

I really don't want to take it to a garage and have to sell a kidney to get it fixed.

Have you checked the connections to the battery - are they clean and tight?

If so, and they are ok, then its time to get the plastics off and check for bad connectiuons elsewhere and also for chaffing wires.

Yeah I've checked the battery and it's not the sidestand switch either.

If it helps at all I feel I should add that it started after the bike was left unused in my garage for two weeks.

I think then you're gonna have to check the connections elsewhere. It could be a bad earth actually from what you describe about the flickering lights

It might be worth considering the ignition switch itself. I had a very similar problem on a car I own, and looked for all the usual suspects as you have done, but it turned out to be corrosion on the contacts in the ignition switch. Does waggling the key have any effect?

Well I've narrowed it down to a abd earth or shoddy wiring. But when it comes to electrics I'm about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

Having a look will be difficult. It's dark when I get home and my garage has no lights or electricity supply.

Basic checking of electrics, taking connectors apart and spraying them with WD40 / contact cleaner is ok...I too dislike electronics, but you pick up simple stuff (like testing) when you actually do it. Its not toooo hard

Its things like wiring diagrams which confuse me!

First thing you could try though is just spraying WD40 into the ignition, where the key goes in, to clean it in there, then put some 3 in 1 oil down for longer alsting protection
