knocking noise
hi there
iv just recently passed my Direct Access and bought my self a 1999 sv650s its got loads of extras (data system3 alarm, scott oiler etc...) it only done 19000miles ok i didnt notice the noise at first, (probably over was so happy i had just got my bike) but yesterday i took it for a little ride and when i got back i noticed a loud knocking noise coming from the engine (same area where you would fill it up with oil.) any sugestions what this could be ? people are telling my its not worth looking into an i should just buy another engine ? any suggestions on what i could do to check what this could be. |

Re: knocking noise
Another member on here had a similar noise and it turned out to be some loose spacers under the tank near the Carbs somewhere .
Welcome to the site by the way , have asked a Mod to move this to the correct area so that you will get more responses . |

Re: knocking noise
Moved to correct section.
OK knocking noise coming from bottom end of engine, may well be terminal. How much oil has it got in it and when did you last check it. If it is the bottom end gone ( and I'm not mechanical enough to positvely say yes or no ) then your friends are correct economically it may well be cheap to buy another complete engine than get yours rebuilt, but you need to be sure exactly what the problem is IMHO.

Re: knocking noise
the oil level is fine and the oil and filter was apparently changed 3000miles ago.
just started the bike up i can hear the noise but its not as loud as it was last night. im going to do a quick check on the engine with a screw driver and my ear. |

Re: knocking noise
How does the noise sound with the clutch pulled in, better, worse, or the same?

Re: knocking noise
Is it high or low pitched? won't mean anything to me but I think if it's high pitched (could be wrong, then it's the terminal one - read it ages ago so soz for uselessness but hopefully it'll promt another forummer)
My engine knocks loads I probably should worry about it more than I do, I've just kind of assumed the cam chain tensioners need doing and that it's generally a noisy twin...ignorance is bliss
