Default Intermittent starter problem.

So i went to my mates, and spent a few hours there, when i left, i went to hit the starter button and a heard a sort of thud, and the starter wouldn't turn, but seemed to drain all the power, all the lights went dim.
So i tried push starting it, but swiftly gave up when the back wheel wouldn't get traction.
Then i thought f*ck it, and tried the starter again. and it fired right up, i rode it home, and it felt fine.
Anyone had something like this before, or any advise?
Cheers

Default Intermittent starter problem.

Is the noise you hear coming from the starter or under the seat?
It doesn't immediately strike me as an electrical problem is a certainty, if there's an apparent noise when you press the button, then the solenoid is being energised at least, and if the noise is coming from the starter then some current is making it's way there.
We need more info I think.
