Default Has anyone ever removed the whole petrol cap?

The reason I'm asking is because the metal ring trim on my petrol cap is flaking away. So I was thinking that I could buy a second hand cap then swap over the metal ring bits. That way, I can keep the same key.
But I don't know if you can remove only the metal bit.
Anyone know?

I've not removed the petrol cap completley nor the ring itself but:

I think I am right in saying that the bolts that hold down the metal ring are of different lengths.
So if you do remove the ring, make sure the bolts go into the same holes they came out of or you risk cracking the metal ring.

I took the whole cap off 3 days ago because it was looking a bit tatty. Went to B&Q brought some fine Wet 'n' Dry, Plasti-kote primer, laquer and Gold aerosol paint. Didn't take long to do and now it looks great. Could be an alternative for you?

Was the metal ring able to come off?

Honestly, I didn't try to seperate the parts. Just used careful application of masking tape while painting different parts.

I had a wee look at one a while back and it didn't look particularily dismantlable- not held together with screws, at least. But that's as far as I went. I managed to damage mine a little by, yes, using the wrong length screws, but fixing it's low on the list

Oh yeah- if you decide to paint it, make sure that whatever paint you use is petrol proof... A lot of common paints will bubble or melt if dripped on, which isn't ideal for a filler cap Hammerite can even go runny on exposure to fumes.
