Hopefully a lot more companies will now make alternative arrangements for postal services. Lots already have moved away from RM for the obvious reason that they will go bust if they're held to ransom by the postal union.

Some union guy on the news this morning was saying the strike was in the best interests of the workers. How? RM do not shift the same volumes that they used to and should be slimmed down to remain viable - it's common sense from a business perspective to remain competitive and to keep costs to the consumer down. Trying to insist that modernisation and streamlining are not needed is ridiculous. The monopoly days are gone, change with the times, stop ****ing off the country in the process! [/rant]

i can kind of understand why they strike though it's people's livelihood's that are at stake with these cut's so i'm not entirely unsympathetic to them but damn they do it a lot.

Unions started off with the right intentions - represent the largely illiterate and completely un-educated masses from unscrupulous mill owners. They have however gone too far and now insist that their members get a better deal at almost any cost.

Yes I'm well aware the pay cuts and changes to working practices that kick off most strikes are no fun for the people affected, but that's the reality of trying to survive these days. A company has to keep up to date and shape itself according to it's market and competition. My company has laid off thousands and none of us have had a pay rise for over two years but if we went on strike the company would lose a lot of money and make even more of us redundant. Plus we'd hurt a lot of "innocent" customers who would also lose money and make lots of their people redundant.

Negotiations and constructive talks are definitiely worth while. Holding people to ransom because you don't get your own way and causing more greater harm than good is not.

I worked for the RM for 13 years i went as a casual and ended up being a boss i worked my way through the ranks, i was on strike for 2 weeks with them not long after starting and i, like all my work collegues didnt do it to rile the rest of the country we did it for better pay as nobody was listening to us, the majority of us who worked nights (like myself as i was a lone parent with a mortgage to pay) worked **** shifts so we could provide for our families some postmen / women had to get up at 3am to be at work for 5am to be out in no matter what weather to post your letters / parcels so if these people have talked until their faces are blue and nobody listens then a strike ballot is called for and i for one whole heartedly support them as this is the only way those who dont understand will sit up and listen
