Default water biking

evening all,

i had my first experience of going through deepish water on the bike on the way home tonight. it did have to be on the unlit flyover section (westbound) of the a40 too. i was in the outside lane doing about 40 as it was chucking it down and the car in front suddenly hit his brakes and half swerved into the middle lane.....'frick' i thought, 'what's going on here?' i lightly dabbed the brakes and then panicked about the car behind, which thankfully was keeping his distance well.

then i realised what the car in front swerved for, both my feet got instanly drenched as i went through some prety hefty standing water!! i guess i'm glad i've got the fender extender and the grease around the plug cap! the bike felt a bit wierd going through the water but thankfully i was able to have released the brakes and was able to pretty much coast through it

did anyone else go that way tonight? I can't understand why that part of the road is unlit, it been like that for ages and it really does make it tough going on rainy nights. if it had been lit the standing water would have been obvious. i guess it is time for an angry letter to the relevant authorities!

Had a similar thing on my way home, only 12 miles but was all suited up, waterproof over trousers, new waterproof boots and my normal jacket, it was bouncing off the road, my bluetooth headset even turned the volume of the music up from the force of the water hitting my helmet, turned off from the main road down the more rural lanes, obviously dark, there was an oncoming car going slowly but i didn't see any wake so I carried on,
suddenly hit the water, deeper than i imagined possible, it came up over the top of my bike! my waterproofs worked like a reverse drainpipe and channeled all the water up the inside of them and soaked my leg, fortunately my jeans soaked it up so my feet were still dry but I didn't expect it to be so deep and to come over the top of the bike! heh, was laughing like a loon afterwards though, no major drama, just completely waterproofed and got absolutely soaked was only doing 30 at most so all under control, does highlight the need to stay safe and aware out there though.

Yeah fast and high rainfall seems to create lots of standing water around here, the A34 al ways gets a large puddle, and you never see it at night on a bike until you are in it. Just keep going straight and think dry thoughts!

I've ridden through a flood that was deeper than the footpegs, that was a bit of a surprise... The only thing that really bothered me (apart from wet feet!) was that I couldn't see the road, there could have been bricks or anything in front of me and I'd never have seen them.
