Default Aluminum Welding Advice/Help

I opened up a thred yesterday about what material the sub-frame was constructed from. Turns out its aluminium.

Well I now need to restrengthen it after lopping off all of the bits I dont need or were just getting in the way.

I dont really want to go out an buy a welder just for this one job, cant really justify it and I dont think that Mrs. Sideshow would be too impressed. Also ally welding is supposed to be a little more dificult.

Does anybody know of a mobile welding service in the Berksire/Hampsire area or do any fellow .orgers have one.... and would you mind doing a bit of welding for me? A crate of something would be in order.

Cheers guys.

hey sideshow, as i'm a welder myself i can tell you the frame is cast ally, bit of a specialist job not really my cup of tea, but i do know a man who can, i'd have to see him in work first.

what exactly do you need welded?

Its only the subframe so its not major structural. I have just taken off the two supports that connect the two sides together. So my subframe is now in two pieces. Just need two supports welding back on, but in different postitions, so the new fairing will fit.

not sure if this will be of any help to you but there's the www.mig-welding.co.uk website which has a forum & lots of members (not unlike us lot) who are properly upto speed on their welding and they might know of a mobile welding service OR maybe willing to help you out if they're local I'm on there myself but I've yet to take the plunge and buy a mig welder (no good for ally as far as I'm aware - it's a bit delicate in comparison to mild steel, which most diy/home projects are fabricated from)

I think you can use both tig and mig but I dont want to go out and buy a welder for just one job. Cheers for the link buddy.

no worries, just a thought

think the reason ally is a bit specialist is because it's very lightweight and strong but because of it's composition - it's VERY susceptible to warping with the heat from welding, hence the need for a skilled welder etc.
