Default Run-in speed

Hi,

Was just wondering what speed the SV will do in each gear when only allowing the engine to rev to 4000rpm (or what ever the recommended engine break in rev limit is). I just wanted to know so that I can get an idea if I will be able to use it to commute 80 miles a day as soon as I get my SV or if I will have to run it in first?

Don't stick to the rev limit for the whole of the run in process, gradually increase it as you do more miles. Also, vary the gears used to alter the revs, so the bike isn't sat at the same revs for long periods of time on the motorway etc.

More wear on the engine when parts are breaking in... when a piston goes up and down, it wears the side of the engine slightly. doing this slowly and increasing speed is like filling... you will end up with a smooth piston inside. Doing this suddenly very quickly can tear the uneven bits on the sides out. (this is in a miniscule scale!) Its also vital that a change of oil is done at the 500 miles service for this reason. All those little bits of engine that are worn down are disposed of in the oil, and you don't want bits of metal floating about your engine no matter how small those bits are.

In the long run, not running in will cause a loss in bhp... although it will only be a few bhp more than normal loss through the ageing process. It also means that more parts will need replaced, again, this is in the later life of the engine. No real short term effects unless you really thrash the engine at the start of its life where you could littereally tear the insides apart as they haven't worn in...

Race bikes are different as they do not need run in as they are already precision set up with the pistons etc precision pollished. Hence the many thousands they cost to set up.

Just ride it sensibly.Better to briefly exceed the rev limit a bit than make the engine labour in a high gear at low revs.Do get the first service done on time at 600 miles.

onyerbike there is another thing to remember, if you run it in too gently then you risk glazing the bores, this means it will lose power and always burn oil (rings will never break in!)
