Default bloody PCs

Yes I have been in the game far to long and should have known better. But lets be honest who really backs up their laptops.

Of course all my precious stuff is back up. but it is all the rest, the stuff you don't worry about until the inevitable goes wrong.

So new disk in, Windoze. nice chat with very helpful man at Microsoft when my licence key doesn't work and he gives me a new number to type in.

So Windows, mcAfee, office, recover my mail file (Personal), recover Lotus notes (Work) then the fun stuff, pulling all the putty configs out of the old registry, then set up sql server tools and connections, again look in the old registry for what servers I used to connect to. Still need to work out the Dameware ones. Why oh Why does microsoft stick config stuff in the registry, it would be far easier if they were in plain text files.

Managed to get my vmware back and working, same with the simh VAX emulator. Still no printers after 36 hours of messing about recovering.

to do :-
Get Oracle XE on and recover from last export
Install jdev
Install Eclipse
install visual studio
install Mind Manager

then it is all the things that we so useful like the bulk rename, anti spyware etc.

I have a whole IT dept to do this for me. But to them it is configured once it gets windows, notes office and mcafee. They do not understand all the extra programms only I seem to need.

So whilst I have lost nothing, it is taking an age to get back to being productive. and where did I store all those licence keys

I would not have the nerve to describe you as PC. either in the job or indoctrinated and spouting bullpoo.

Now if I had said Bloody Plods, then you know I would be having a dig.

Steady on. I am comfortable with my sexuality, but friendly plods with handcuffs and truncheons are not my cup of tea thank you.

Tut tut, my image is backed up every couple of weeks.
You going have to tell the IT department exactly what you need and to pull their finge rout and take an image of your lappy every few weeks from now on.

They do not back up laptops etc. Standard policy is no data to be stored on them etc.

We have over 10,000 laptops and 30,000 PCs so it would be a logistical nightmare to back up client systems. but 99% of these are a standard built from image etc. It is just people like me that need to do more than write memos and email, that cause the problem.

Most of the time its the employees responsibility to back up the data, most large IT departments just dish out a default image.
