Default Recommend me a cheap track day bike

Since buying the SV I've had real roller coaster of biking emotions. I love riding again and I love my nice newish K6 tidy SV. I know I can't outride the bike on the road and probably not on the track yet either.

I'd love to wait until next year and maybe sell it and buy something like an 08 plate Daytona 675 or GSX 750, but I really want to do more trackdays especially next Spring / Summer but the thought of binning the SV on the track fills me with ££££horror, let alone a 675 or 750.

So I'm leaning towards buying a cheap track bike getting a few track days on at the end of the summer, working on it over the winter and having something half decent but not something that will cost me too much.

So what do you think I should buy, another SV for track as I'd be familiar with it or something different for variation?

Bear in mind I'd only be able to layout about £1200-£1500 for the initial outlay?

What options have I got. Any advice appreciated.

As we are about tomorrow ill show you a nice little road that can push the sv to its limits and you will see how capable it is for fast riding.
Which prompts another ..eg cheap curvey for a track bike, just by looking at all the mini twin threads and speak to jambo as hes doing one atm you will see a small amount can go a long way if you get the right parts from the right place and end up with a very capable bike for short circuits.

+1 enjoyed throwing my curvy round Snetterton the other month.

Ok not as fast as the other bikes on the straights, but round the bendy bits, more than enough to have loads of fun

I do, I do want to.
I think part of me knows it makes sense to stick with SV's on the track but I kind of think I want to try something else, like a cheapish SRAD or something else.

I'm never going to Snetterton though Maviczap, 3 rides, 2 crashes, 1 did not finish.

I think SV's make sense but if not an SV what else is feasible?

for that amount of money most 600 of the late 90's or early millenium are reacheable.

Out of those my personal preference would by a J series ZX6R but a decent SRAD can be had for £900.

My SV stands me at about £1600 but its a decent spec and its fairly unique and thats the joy of SV's most on the track have been modified to look nothing like the original.

Dont forget to add tyre warmers, stands and wets on wheels into your budget.

Cheers Harry, I had a look on ebay and MCN for ZXR6's, there's some about. What's special about the J series?

I'm absolutely rubbish at researching things myself, I bought the SV on impulse, then logged on here to see what I'd bought.

Also to anyone that might give an objective opinion, are maintaining/ balancing the carbs on a curvey a pain in the wotsit or is it a case of getting someone good to get em right and leaving them alone, kind of like the no fuss FI I have on mine at the moment?

Cheers all. I'll need to make a decision by mid July (when my wife spends the last of our spare money) so grateful for views.

Balancing SV carbs is easy.

As for the Kawasaki I have rode the SRAD, ZX6R (G and J) and CBR Steelies all on the track and I prefer the ZX6R but its personal preference really felt lighter than the SRAD and handled better that the Steelies.

Like my SV better than all of them coz its even lighter and narrower, you can move around on it and its got character.

Definitely old track, I looked at an old programme where I made notes in it and I said at the time a guy peeled in earlier into a corner across me than I expected and took the front end out.

The 2nd time, again old track, I just remember a right hander at the "back" of the track where I ran wide and onto the grass, then lost it in a divot or bump or something. Total washout, rubbish riding.

Long time ago about 1984......oh dear
