Default Air box mod for free.

Read in this months Fast Bikes that you can remove the top of the air box under the fuel tank and just have the air filter with the tank acting as the top cover.

It apparently improves the airflow and gives a couple of extra Nm of torque.

Anyone done this, and is it as simple as it sounds?

Cris.

im sure you can, but the filter would be loose, collect extra amounts of dirt such as small rodents and pigeons :P but the fueling would need to be altered to suit the larger "air box"

not going to try this one myself mind.

Not the most effective way of modding your airbox to work better, in fact you may just find you get more noise and thats it!

My brother did this to his 2003 after reading Fast Bikes. He screwed the filter down with some mesh type stuff, he says the sound is awesome and the front comes up a bit more than it used to so I'd guess it's worth a try.

I remember when I got my bike (private), I dropped it off at a garage for a once over and a service. They said the air filter wasn't even attached. It was probably this mod then. I've since changed my air filter myself, and I'm pretty sure the lid holds the filter in place, so as has been said above, you'd need to hold it in place somewhere. I might give it a bash myself and see what happens. Will report back if I do.

My SV1000 has a BMC filter and no top on the airbox. It has a custom fit aluminium plate that fits the edge of the filter and screws into the original screw holes. Was supplied by BMC racing before I got the bike and I've had no problems at all. Is pretty loud though. If you do it make sure you take any flappy foam of the bottom of the tank.

Filter + m4 2:1 system added about 15 bhp if I remember according to the dyno print outs that were in with the paperwork

Think I'll just leave this mod to the racers and not bother. Although at the next service I might take the top off and start her up to listen to the difference.
