Default Rev counter has stopped working?

My rev counter on my 99 naked curvy stopped working completely last night. It was working when I rode into work but didn't work when I started it up to come home again. Nothing else seems to be wrong? Wires seem to be on front coil okay though. Any ideas on what this could be or where to start checking?

The front coil negative wire, (black/yellow or possibly black/orange - I can't remember exactly), is also the tachometer trigger, (I know you know this, but just to be entirely clear), it goes from the ignition unit to the coil and from a junction inside the loom to the instruments.
Obviously it's continuous from the ignition unit to the front coil as it's running OK, so the first thing I'd check is continuity from either the connector on the ignition unit or the coil - whichever you feel is more convenient - to the connector on the instruments, and the security and continuity of the connector on the instruments.
If that's OK check that the wire from the connector into the instruments is OK, if that checks out then the fault is inside the instruments.
It's worth checking the red voltage supply wire into the clocks is OK, (from fuse marked 'meter'), and supplying battery voltage, but I doubt that's the problem as other things wouldn't work if there is something amiss there.
